Teeth, Heart and Brain

Karen Flawith

I’m sure we all remember as kids being reminded umpteen times by our parents and school to brush our teeth. Although I’m sure we hated being nagged at the time, it was all for the greater good.

Looking after your teeth and oral hygiene is important as it affects your overall health.

Firstly, it helps prevent tooth loss and gum disease by preventing a build-up of plaque and tartar.

It gets scarier from there (well for me it does). Research from Harvard has shown that patients with periodontal disease are at greater risk of having heart disease because periodontal disease increases inflammation within the body including artery inflammation.

Some recent analysis by the NIH in the States has suggested that the bacteria that causes gum disease is also associated with the development of Alzheimer’s and dementia, especially vascular dementia.

So, there you have it, brushing and flossing regularly is important not just for the maintenance of our teeth. However, brushing and flossing is not enough. Having a regular dental check-up and professional dental clean (every 6 month) is recommended.
